My Review

I am not going to lie, I was so stoked about reading
The Heir. I loved The Selection trilogy and when I find out Kiera Cass was given the green-light to continue the series -- from the point of view of Maxon and America's daughter -- I almost cried. So . . . I may have set my expectations a bit too high going in. Do not get me wrong, I enjoyed reading the start of Eadlyn's -- you don't know this, but I didn't even remember her name -- story, it wasn't as grasping as her mother's.

Tag Line:

35 suitors. 1 princess. A new selection has begun.

Opening Line:

I could not hold my breath for seven minutes.

Plot:

T
here wasn't as much romantic sparks as I was hoping for-- you know, the swoony moments to die for. But the plot as a whole had promise. The plot was basically the same as for The Selection. Reluctant girl navigates through The Selection and finds a spouse. However, I enjoy Eadlyn as a character so she keeps me in the story.

As for the sidebar: King Maxon changed the game, as he had dreamed, and rid the country of the caste system. America is gracefully and strong as ever. *And they are both still deeply in love* Eadlyn has adorable brothers with personality and one with his own subplot drama.

All in all, I enjoyed reading The HeirI do hope the next book in the series has a bit more drama to spice the plot up. Although it is not one of my favorites it is a decent read, worth the time if you are willing.

Character Breakdown:

Eadlyn - I can say, without a doubt, I relate to Eadlyn. We have such similarities in beliefs and characteristics it was the books saving grace. Because the main character reminded me of me -- how vain that sounds -- I felt as if I were a part of the story.

My Review

Low Red Moon is one of my favorite YA werewolf stories. I was ecstatic about hearing there is a sequel coming out, Moonrise. Alas, the release date was scheduled for January 2012 but I haven't heard any news about it. Moving on  . . .

Opening Line:

I was covered in blood when the police found me.

Plot:

The way Low Red Moon started -- I mean read the opening line --, if that isn't enough to get you to read it, then here's what should: Read Low Red Moon!

While the suspense of finding out whom murdered Avery's parents wasn't played up to the maximum, the suspense of the story was still good. The story didn't drag and held a good pace. The plot unfurled nicely and I enjoyed being able to tag along Avery's journey of dealing with her parents' deaths, unlocking her forgotten memories as well as navigating the attraction to Ben and dealing with his own dark secret.

What I didn't like was how generic Avery and Ben's first meeting was. Avery is sick, she gets sent to the nurse's office, Ben pops up in the Principal's office then low and behold Avery is asked to be his welcoming wagon.

Overall, I really enjoyed Low Red Moon. It is a wonderful blend of mystery, paranormal monsters and romance. My only regret is that the sequel has not been released. I hope the book gods hears my prays.

Review : Killer Instinct by S.E. Green

*Warning: This review may contain spoilers. Read at your own risk.

PublisherSimon Pulse

Release DateMay 6, 2014
Pages: 272

The Story:

A teen girl version of Dexter meets the high stakes danger and mystery of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in this riveting debut.

Lane is a typical teenager. Loving family. Good grades. After-school job at the local animal hospital. Martial arts enthusiast. But her secret obsession is studying serial killers. She understands them, knows what makes them tick.

Why?

Because she might be one herself.

Lane channels her dark impulses by hunting criminals and delivering justice when the law fails. The vigilantism stops shy of murder, but with each visceral rush, the line of self-control blurs. And when a young preschool teacher goes missing—and returns in pieces—Lane gets a little too excited about tracking down “the Decapitator,” the vicious serial murderer who has come to her hometown.

As she gets dangerously caught up in a web of lies about her own past, Lane realizes she is no longer invisible or safe. Especially after the Decapitator contacts her directly. Now she needs to use her unique talents to find the true killer’s identity before she—or someone she loves—becomes the next victim…

My Review

I really enjoyed reading Killer Instinct. The premise for the story was phenomenal. And the writing was crisp and to the point. There was also humorous bits -- something I always appreciate. Well done, S.E. Green. I will definitely read its sequel, Killer Within, which releases May 19, 2015.

Tag Line:

Everyone has a dark side.

Opening Line:

I study serial killers.

Plot:

As aforementioned, t
he premise for Killer Instinct was phenomenal. A teenage girl believes she is a serial killer. A serial killer with the urge to kill other serial killers. After reading , I curious about other reviewers opinion on the book. Apparently, many saw the likeness to Dexter, the television show, and complained. Honestly, I think that is what drew me in. Yes, its premise may be mirroring Dexter but it is still a great premise.

There is even a serial killer that catches onto Lane's trail, I thought it was a nice touch. With Lane hunting serial killers while a decapitating serial killer keeps track of her and sends her body parts fleshes out the plot. As for the identity of said killer, while the person was on my suspect list, I wasn't entirely sure which is better than absolutely knowing who the culprit is.

Overall, I think Green did a wonderful job seeing the story through. Killer Instinct was a disturbing delight I could not put down.

Character Breakdown:

Lane - Have to love this girl! She was creepy as hell. And a nutzo. It was wonderful. Lane is stoic, smart, cold, bold, disturbing and more. Of all the books I have read, Lane is definitely one of my favorite characters.

My Review

I was so excited to read They All Fall Down! And I am glad I did. Stories about serial killers was never a big taste of mine but after reading downpour, I have been on a serial killer binge.

Tag Line:

Every girl would die to be on the list.

Opening Line:

I runaway from home in a downpour.

Plot:

The premise of
They All Fall Down is what caught my attention. A Top 10 Hottie List of girls that start to end up dead. One. By. One. How could I not read the story?

On that note, there was action from the first page. A car accident that nearly kills the protagonist, Kenzie, and a mysterious text message about being fifth on The List that disappears after she reads it.

And the plot thickens!

I also appreciated the underlying plot conflict that made the overall plot more meaty, adding to the story and tie it all together. Kenzie carries the burden of her older brother's death, her parents' separation and her mother's overbearing protectiveness spurs the storyline.

The plot had a good balance of thrills, chills, plot-twists and romance. I enjoyed the writing style. It flowed and didn't bog down. There was no downtime in the story and I think that helped keep me enthralled.

Character Breakdown:

Kenzie Summerall - Kenzie is relatable and real. Actually, I really enjoyed reading her character, getting to know her. She is confident in an understated, smart girl way.

Molly Kenzie's best friend. She drove me nuts! I thought she was irritating, inconsiderate, pushy and basic. Molly kept bugging Kenzie about basking in the shadow of Kenzie's newfound popularity -- she wanted to be there and would not let Kenzie forget it.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from They All Fall Down:

Kenzie & Hot Guy (you'll have to read to find out): "So you know I don't want to be his girlfriend." I close my eyes and reaches up to touch his hair. Oh my God, I could touch this hair forever. "I want to be yours."
He kisses me again, then trails a few down my neck, making me want to scream. "You already are," he whispers.
"I am?"
"You think I'm going to fly through the jungle to save just any girl?" -- pages 236-237

RatingTWO Gold Stars!!!!

My Review

Tag Line:

Love found her. Now it won't let her go.

Opening Line:

At last I can breathe.

Plot:

The plot of Falling for You was decently laid out. The pacing was a little slower than I expected.
To be honest, what made Falling for You 's rating suffer was my disappointment with the climax. For once, I wanted blurb predictable. I wanted the psycho, obsessed ex-boyfriend to be the murderous stalker I knew he had in him. Although, at first I thought the pacing steady considering what I hoped it would boil and blow up to become. However, when the plot conflict volcano finally exploded, it felt unspectacular so it made the pacing seem to drag (if that makes any sense at all).

Character Breakdown:

Rae Lynch - What I enjoyed about Rae's character so much is that she wasn't the weak, thirsty-for-love teenage girl I assumed she would be. Sure she had insecurity and wanted to be wanted, to be loved but it wasn't to the point that she remained in an abusive relationship out of some misguided need to fill a hole her parents didn't. It's nice to read a story that circles closely to matters I can relate to in real life but without the same exact mistakes being made.

Nathan - Perfect stalker ex material! Sexy, mysterious, confident, selfish, and so on. Nathan had so much potential! I was so disappointed I could see him in his Super Saiyan (Dragonball Z nerds will get this reference; in other words, his 100%, max potential).

Overall, I didn't hate Falling for You, it simply didn't do enough for me. I think Falling for You lost a star in rating for the lackluster finale showdown. Had there been some full-fledge stalker, obsessed ex insaneness with violence and psychological thrill and blood, my rating for would have definitely gone up. Still, Falling for You is not so bad that I would dissuade anyone from reading it. If you're bored or waiting between release dates then maybe give Falling for You a try.

Review : Goddess by Josephine Angelini

*Warning: This review may contain spoilers. Read at your own risk.

PublisherHarperCollins Publishers

Release Date: April 29, 2014
Pages: 432
Source: Own

The Story:

International bestselling author Josephine Angelini concludes her action-packed Starcrossed trilogy with Goddess—a romantically-charged page-turner that Newsday raved was a "clever reworking of Greek mythology."
After Helen Hamilton accidentally unleashes the violent gods from their captivity on Olympus, she and her friends must imprison them before their thirst for war—and blood—take over the world. But the gods' fury already has a body count, and time is running out. With Lucas Delos's life hanging in the balance, and their once-solid group of friends now divided, Helen must face this battle alone, while also deciding who has her heart—Lucas, or the possible Tyrant, Orion.
With a masterfully-woven plot and epically-high stakes, the compelling twists and turns in Goddess will leave readers completely spellbound.

RatingFOUR Gold Stars!!!!

My Review

Josephine Angelini has struck again! What a bittersweet ending. So sad to see the trilogy end . . . but so good, I couldn't help speeding through
Goddess. Having said that, Starcrossed is one of my Top Favorite Series. I am glad I got to be along for Helen and her friend's wild ride.

Tag Line:

She must rise, or they will fall.

Opening Line:

Helen could see what she guessed was the River Styx just off to her left.

Plot:

The plot-line of
Goddess was well-laid. Readers walked alongside Helen on her difficult quest to stop a supernatural war, all the while reaching her maximum potential, growing into her skin and keeping her friends and family safe. Not to mention, biding tension of the impending war of demigods and the traitor lurking amongst the ranks takes its toll on everyone. It is difficult to fight for the right-side when the ones you should be protecting isn't so crystal clear.

There was a perfect balance of intrigue, mystery, evil and romantics. And boy, the twists and turns were fruitful and forced me to the end of my seat.

Right when you think you kind of-sort of have things figured out . . . BAM! No, you don't

All in all, the writing itself was humorous, strong and captivating. Angelini weaved a stunning tale that had me enthralled from the first page and never released me from its grasp. If you have no read the Starcrossed trilogy then I don't understand what you waiting for. An invitation? Well, here IT is!

Rating: THREE Gold Stars!!!

My Review:

I adored the The Goddess Test series. The writing wasn't the most sophisticated considering it was published but the premise of the story was great. Next to YA werewolf romance, I LOVE retellings of the Hades and Persephone story. So, I gobbled The Goddess Test series up in no time. If you enjoy YA books inspired by Greek mythology look no further.

Tag Line:

Immortality or love. You can't have both.

Opening Line:

Henry.
I bolted upright up in the darkness.

The Plot:

The Goddess Interrupted ended on a major cliffhanger which set up the plot for perfectly. In the conclusion to the series, Kate had to deal with a pregnancy, the betrayal of her closest friend, her separation from Hades and being held captive by the most powerful being, Cronus under the threat of fatal harm to those she holds dear. The plot is filled with drama, angst, emotional tug-a-war and more.

Character Breakdown:

Kate Winters - Kate's biggest virtue was how selfless she was. No matter how bad you treated her or the horrible things you've done, she always forgave. Maybe she wasn't a fierce fighter but she had strong character.

My Review

Tag Line:

They say love is al about great chemistry . . .

Opening Line:

The first period of the first day of my senior year kicked off with an academic ritual that I'd dreaded since my earlier days in school.

Plot:

The plot of Jekel Loves Hyde was well structured and its premise was interesting. Right off the bat, Jill has to deal with her father's death, his secret life, her missing college tuition money, and her mother's potential mental breakdown. Then insert sexy, mysterious foreign guy and whala! we have a book.

There was anticipation and suspense -- what is going to happen next? when are they going to hook up? who killed her father? what is Tristen's dark secret? And there was plenty morsels of gushy romance -- maybe too clean and melodramatic but still enjoyable.

My main issue with the plot was the conflict resolution. There was no action, no bing bang pow. The conflict was simply over. However, what saved the ending for me was the epilogue - we get a small glimpse into the future for the main characters and a dash of the feels.

Character Breakdown:

Jill Jekel - Jill is the smart good-girl who always does as she is told and dreams of nothing but going to a good college which makes her very relatable to me.

Tristen Hyde - For the most part Tristen was sexy and a little mysterious. Always a good combo.

I really enjoyed Jekel Loves Hyde! After reading Beth Fantaskey's Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, I was ecstatic to bite into Jekel Loves Hyde. And I am glad to say that the anticipation was worthwhile. Overall, Jekel Loves Hyde is a quick, enjoyable read that is worth your time.

Rating
TWO Gold Stars!!

My Review

I thought the premise for The Chapel Wars was fantastic. But I have to say by the end of it, my reaction was simply "Meh." There was no bang, no spark. You know when you see someone you are crushing on and there is tension, chemistry? For me, The Chapel Wars didn't have that. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it but I didn't particularly like it either.

Opening Line:

Inheritance. I hate that word. Translation: Sorry someone you loved kicked the bucket; now here's your present.

Plot:

I liked the idea of Holly fighting to save her grandfather's chapel and being in competition with the cheesy chapel next door -- while dating the owner's grandson. But I feel as if Leavitt didn't milk the conflict for all it was worth. Many of the setbacks Holly faced and efforts she put in to saving her grandfather's chapel was pretty much glazed over -- hinted at in sentences in the past-tense.

Overall, the plot premise (as mentioned above) was interesting and had plenty of potential. However, it fell flat. And the ending sucked. As I have mentioned in other reviews that I have written, I prefer my books to have happy endings (call it childish but there is plenty of real life grief to go around).

Character Breakdown:

Holly - Holly was a tad more interesting than Dax but still too bland for me. However, I did appreciate how hardworking she was as well as the love and passion she had for her grandfather's chapel.

Dax - I didn't really get the chance to know Dax. He was wishy-washy to me. I couldn't really picture him in my mind's eye -- he didn't seem real. Other than that, I suppose he was okay.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from
The Chapel Wars:

Holly to Dax: "Sense? There is nothing about me sitting in a Gothic wedding chapel with a ridiculously handsome cowboy reading a letter from my dead grandfather that makes sense."
"Ridiculously handsome?"
"I meant to say ridiculous."

Review : A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks

*Warning: This review may contain spoilers. Read at your own risk.
PublisherWarner Books
Publication date: 1999
Pages: 224
Source: Own

The Story:
Every April, when the wind blows in from the sea and mingles with the scent of lilacs, Landon Carter remembers his last year at Beaufort High.
It was 1958, and Landon had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love. Certainly the last person in town he thought he'd fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town's Baptist minister.
A quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks, Jamie seemed content living in a world apart from the other teens. She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out.
Landon would never have dreamed of it. Then a twist of fate made Jamie his partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter's life would never be the same. Being with Jamie would show him the depths of the human heart and lead him to a decision so stunning it would send him irrevocably on the road to manhood…
No other author today touches our emotions more deeply than Nicholas Sparks. In A Walk To Remember, he tells a truly unforgettable story, one that glimmers with all of his magic, holding us spellbound - and reminding us that in life each of us may find one great loved, the kind that changes everything…
RatingFOUR GOLD STARS!!!!!

My Review: One Word: UNFORGETTABLE

A Walk to Remember was the first book I read authored by Nicholas Sparks. I was a goner from then on. I read A Walk to Remember back when I was a baby teen and it remains one of my favorites.

The story takes place in Beaufort, North Carolina. The year is 1958, when women wear dresses and men don hats. To add the icing on the cake, the town is as religious as it gets. There is no getting around going to church on Sundays (Hint hint: there reason why I mention this is because it ties in heavily to the overall story.)

Landon Carter is the narrator of the story. He is in his senior year at Beaufort High. He is not much of a jock but made fun of people if they are different from him and his crew of popularish friends. For the most part, he is an average teenage boy who gets into the run of the mill trouble -- Daddy issues can do that to a child. And doesn't know what he wants to do with his life . . . until his eyes are forced open and standing in his vision is Jamie Sullivan.

Jamie Sullivan is as good and kind as it gets. And friendless, spending her lunch period sitting alone. Being the town's Baptist minister's daughter and wearing the same sweater everyday has encouraged several of her classmates taunting of her -- Landon's crew included. But being the gracious girl she is she doesn't let it get to her. I suppose maybe because sometimes there are worse things than being teased . . . such as your mother dying during childbirth. She has a strong belief and trust in God and spends her free time helping children at an orphanage which helps her get through her dilemmas. And even through everything, she is at peace and generally happy. Jamie has plans and goals, knows how she wants to spend the rest of her life. And she Landon's complete and total opposite in every sense of the word.

Insert the high school play.

Against his wishes, Landon is casts as the lead and has absolutely no interest or experience in acting. With no other choice, Landon's begrudgingly seeks Jamie's help. Reluctantly, they team up to prepare for the play. And destiny takes the lead from there . . .

A Walk to Remember is a good southern romance. The story is believable, it's wholesome and heartbreaking. Readers are able to embark on a journey of self-discovery with Landon, one filled with real, honest to God (*Pun intended :)*) love, tearjerker moments and more. I would definitely recommend A Walk to Remember to anyone who is a sap for a genuine young adult romance. is an amazingly unforgettable story that will make you smile, swoon and cry. Nicholas Sparks is a phenomenal storyteller who makes readers feel as if they are in the story alongside the characters.
