Synopsis:

In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare creates a violent world, in which two young people fall in love. It is not simply that their families disapprove; the Montagues and the Capulets are engaged in a blood feud.

In this death-filled setting, the movement from love at first sight to the lovers’ final union in death seems almost inevitable. And yet, this play set in an extraordinary world has become the quintessential story of young love. In part because of its exquisite language, it is easy to respond as if it were about all young lovers.

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White

Publisher
Delacorte Press
Release Date: September 25, 2018
Pages: 304

The Story:

The Frankenstein legend as you've never seen it before, as told by New York Timesbestselling author Kiersten White! You will not be able to put down this stunning and dark reimagining of the Mary Shelley classic told from the point of view of Elizabeth, Victor Frankenstein's adopted sister, timed for the 200th anniversary.

Elizabeth Lavenza hasn't had a proper meal in weeks. Her thin arms are covered with bruises from her "caregiver," and she is on the verge of being thrown into the streets . . . until she is brought to the home of Victor Frankenstein, an unsmiling, solitary boy who has everything--except a friend.

Victor is her escape from misery. Elizabeth does everything she can to make herself indispensable--and it works. She is taken in by the Frankenstein family and rewarded with a warm bed, delicious food, and dresses of the finest silk. Soon she and Victor are inseparable.

But her new life comes at a price. As the years pass, Elizabeth's survival depends on managing Victor's dangerous temper and entertaining his every whim, no matter how depraved. Behind her blue eyes and sweet smile lies the calculating heart of a girl determined to stay alive no matter the cost . . . as the world she knows is consumed by darkness.

THE DARK DESCENT OF ELIZABETH FRANKENSTEIN is a stunning reimagination of the classic, speaking to the fears we all bury deep inside.

Bookish Quiz : How Long Would You Survive a Zombie Apocalypse?

*Bookish Quiz is a meme hosted by The Tattered Page to share bookish quizzes found and personal results*

Hey Bookies!

So, in the interest of paying homage to the release day Justina Irealand's
Dread Nation, Epic Reads came up with a bookish quiz with the same zombie theme.

Dread Nation released on April 3, 2018 and you can purchase it on most bookish sites or Amazon.

Synopsis:

Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville—derailing the War Between the States and changing America forever. In this new nation, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Reeducation Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead. But there are also opportunities—and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It’s a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society’s expectations.

But that’s not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston’s School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn’t pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose. But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies. And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems.
Here's a snippet from Epic Reads regarding the quiz:

If you haven’t gotten on the DREAD NATION hype train yet, you really need to read that book and board it, stat. Not only is it a super clever, alternate history look at social and racial divisions, but it’s also super epic and action-packed. Because this world began anew when the dead rose from the battlefields of the Civil War. Seriously, DREAD NATION is clever and brutal in all the best ways.
But it’s not alone! Other zombified YA—like the searing DEVILS UNTO DUST—have us really wondering… do we have what it takes to survive in a world teaming with zombies? Can we take on the shamblers from DREAD NATION and live to tell the tale?
If you need some help before you dive into this, we have a handy little post all about the etiquette of shambler killing right here. Study up, because this is life or death!

Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake

Publisher
HarperTeen
Release DateSeptember 4, 2018
Pages: 320

The Story:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake returns with the highly anticipated third book in the Three Dark Crowns series! And while Arsinoe, Mirabella, and Katharine all have their own scores to settle, they aren’t the only queens stirring things up on Fennbirn Island.
Queen Katharine has waited her entire life to wear the crown. But now that she finally has it, the murmurs of dissent grow louder by the day. There’s also the alarming issue of whether or not her sisters are actually dead—or if they’re waiting in the wings to usurp the throne.
Mirabella and Arsinoe are alive, but in hiding on the minland and dealing with a nightmare of their own: being visited repeatedly by a specter they think might be the fabled Blue Queen. Though she says nothing, her rotting, bony finger pointing out to sea is clear enough: return to Fennbirn.
Jules, too, is in a strange place—in disguise. And her only confidants, a war-gifted girl named Emilia and her oracle friend Mathilde, are urging her to take on a role she can’t imagine filling: a legion-cursed queen who will lead a rebel army to Katharine’s doorstep.
This is an uprising that the mysterious Blue Queen may have more to do with than anyone could have guessed—or expected.

by Jodi Meadows, Cynthia Hand & Brodi Ashton

Publisher:
HarperTeen
Release Date: June 26, 2018
Pages: 464

The Story:

Move over, Charlotte Brontë. The authors of the New York Times bestselling My Lady Jane are back with an irreverent spin on Jane Eyre—a tale of mischief, romance, and supernatural mayhem perfect for fans of The Princess Bride or A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue.
You may think you know the story. Penniless orphan Jane Eyre begins a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester—and, Reader, she marries him. Or does she?
Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions in this stand-alone follow-up to My Lady Jane, which was called “an utter delight” (ALA Booklist, starred review), and “an uproarious historical fantasy that’s not to be missed” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Image result for Cynthia HandCynthia Hand grew up in southeast Idaho, just outside the town of Idaho Falls. From as far back as she can remember, she loved books and reading, and wrote her first short story (about a fairy being born in a tulip) when she was around six years old—pretty much as soon as she could write. Her second grade teacher, Mrs. Widdison, told Cynthia that she’d be an author some day, and Cynthia believed her. She kept writing stories all through grade school, most of them wildly fantastical musings on supernatural beings or creatures, none of which ever won the annual short story competition where the writer got to meet Kenneth Thomasma, the author of one of Cynthia’s favorite books, Naya Nuki. Cynthia learned early on that if you wanted to win the writing contest, you should write stories about that time your parents got their car stuck in the snow on the side of a mountain just before dark. You should not write about a group of unicorns fighting to take over an island from an alien invasion. Cynthia kept writing about unicorns anyway.

Opening Line:

My parents didn't exactly jump for joy when I decided to drive headfirst into adulthood by moving south with my boyfriend right after my high school graduation.

My Review

I have always enjoyed shows the centered on renovation as well as my love for old houses. Years ago, while Better Than New is genuine, informative and inspiring. An engrossing page turner, I could not put the book down.

While not the most fantastical writing, the story is genuine and perhaps what makes it so compelling.

Reader get an exclusive peek into in the tell-all of Curtis’ life like never before.
Curtis’ voice is that if an old friend telling stories of days past over steaming cups of hot chocolate. While I read the book, I felt as if Curtis was talking directly to me.
Her voice was real, honest. She did not hold back. Not even the embarrassing moments or romantic blunders.

If you are a Rehab Addict addict then you will be obsessed with Better than New.

All in all,  Better Than New is fresh, real and insightful. A real treat for fans of Rehab Addict -- or any who desires to behind-the-scenes account. Read  Better Than New, you will not be disappointed.
