Reading Road-Trip: Welcome to New Mexico!

So you have arrived, fellow patrons of travel. How has the trip been treating you thus far? As the host of the New Mexico stop I am happy to be a part of the first ever Reading Road-Trip hosted by I Like These Books and Icey Books. Moreover, I am glad that you have decided to drop in on the Land of Enchantment.

While you're here, how about I give you a tour?

The Rio Grande, New Mexico's longest river, running through the entire length of the state.

Public education was almost non-existent in New Mexico until the end of the 19th century. As late as 1888 there was not a single public college or high school in the entire territory.

In New Mexico, it is against the law to dance around a Sombrero.
Las Vegas was the largest city in New Mexico at the turn of the 20th century. It was established long before its Nevada counterpart. And it was also the first territorial capital (for one day).

Since New Mexico's climate is so dry 3/4 of the roads are left unpaved. The roads don't wash away.

White Sands National Monument is a desert, not of sand, but of gleaming white gypsum crystals.

In Las Cruces, it is against the law to carry a lunch box down Main Street.

New Mexico has far more sheep and cattle than people. There are only about 12 people per square mile.

Santa Fe is the oldest state capitol in the nation.

The first and only surviving Carnegie Library in New Mexico is located in Las Vegas.

New Mexico State officials ordered 400 words of "sexually explicit material" to be cut from Romeo and Juliet.

As for Young Adult books and authors in relation to New Mexico, my findings resulted in slim pickings but I'm sure we'll make the best of it.
Books set in New Mexico:

Fated by Alyson Noel
Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume
Shifting by Bethany Wiggins
Roswell High series by Melinda Metz
Crank by Ellen Hopkins
Prism by Faye and Aliza kellerman
Split by Swati Avasthi
The Brothers Torres by Coert Voorhees
Sammy and Juliana in Hollywood by Ben Alire Saenz

Authors that are from and/or live New Mexico:

Lauren Bjorkman, author of My Life Invented
Carolee Dean, author of Forget Me Not, Take Me There, and Comfort
Lois Duncan, author of I Know What You Did Last Summer

Now on to the part you've been waiting for. Up for grabs is . . .

Fated:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Immortals, Alyson Noël, comes Fated—a breathtaking new saga brimming with magic, mystery, and an intoxicating love story that will steal your heart away. Meet The Soul Seekers.

Strange things are happening to Daire Santos. Crows mock her, glowing people stalk her, time stops without warning, and a beautiful boy with unearthly blue eyes haunts all her dreams. Fearing for her daughter’s sanity, Daire’s mother sends her to live with the grandmother she’s never met. A woman who recognizes the visions for what they truly are—the call to her destiny as a Soul Seeker—one who can navigate the worlds between the living and dead.

There on the dusty plains of Enchantment, New Mexico, Daire sets out to harness her mystical powers. But it’s when she meets Dace, the boy from her dreams, that her whole world is shaken to its core. Now Daire is forced to discover if Dace is the one guy she's meant to be with...or if he’s allied with the enemy she's destined to destroy.

As the search commences to find her sister, the twin left behind must rely on their intense bond to uncover the truth. But is there anyone around her she can trust, when everyone could be a suspect? And ultimately, can she even trust herself? The Story:

Rating: FIVE GOLD STARS!!!!!

My Review: One word: THRILLING

In the Lowlands of Scotland, AD 1404, shortly after Ember Morrow's sixteenth birthday finds herself embarking on a life-changing journey. Having grown up the youngest daughter of nobleman Edmund Morrow and Lady Ossia Morrow, she has known the life of privilege. But, unlike her sister, Agnes Morrow, who is soon-to-be shipped off and married to a kind, wealthy French count, Ember never warmed up to the idea of having the life of marriage and motherhood that was expected of her.

Lord Morrow, the arrogant man constantly in search of away to expand his land and authority that he was, expected to marry Ember to the son of a well-to-do landholder just as he did her sister. So it is no surprise that Ember's father is enraged when two knights, Alistair Hart and Barrow Hess, come to take her to Tearmunn in the Scottish Highlands. Ember who has awaited the day when the Conatus would come for her as promised on the eve of her birth. Ember's life for her mother's. "Death hovered over mother and unborn child."

Ember is brought to live in Tearmunn to serve Conatus, an elite Guard, where she discovers that the creatures she must put arms against are not of her world. But, their duty is not without a price. As a knight of the Conatus Guard a warrior must vow to forsake comfort of family and love and devote their lives to protecting the innocent against the supernatural evil that infest the world. A price that she is willing to pay without blinking an eye . . . until she beings her training under powerful, brooding Barrow Hess.

Before long, Ember finds herself wedged between the stern, handsome man who must train her to become the warrior she was meant to be, and easy-going Alistair Hart, her oldest and best friend from childhood. The only one who has always encouraged her hopes and dreams of a life beyond being a mother and wife. The young, black haired, blue eyed Master Hart, has kept his promised to come back for Ember after a year away serving as a knight for Conatus Guard. But after Ember's arrival at Tearmunn, Alistair reveals to her secrets that threatens their friendship.

All is tested when a member of the Circle is found to be dabbling in dark magic, involved in the murder of a fellow knight of the Guard. And in league with Bosque Mar, the sinister unearthly being with powers Conatus has never seen.  When the Guard is divided, Ember finds herself having to choose between following the path of darkness and fleeing Tearmunn to devote her life to fighting against knights that were once her comrades.

Rift by Andrea Cremer was an unexpectedly delicious treat that I devoured like no body's business . . . In this thrilling and action packed prequel to the Nightshade trilogy, readers meet a young woman who learns lessons on love, friendship and standing up for what she believes in during a time when woman were expected to behave a certain way. Rift, the story of how the rift between the Searchers and the Keepers came to be, is a must read!

Here is one of my favorite quotes from Rift:

Page 430: Ember pulled his face to hers, kissing him again before she said, "Your strength gives me courage."

He smiled gently. "No, Ember, that is all your strength and none of mine." She balked, but he kissed her, murmuring against her lips, "And that is why I love you."

The Immortal Rules:

Publisher: Harlequin
Publication date: April 24, 2012

In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die…or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.
