The Story:

When sixteen-year-old Amanda Verner's family decides to move from their small mountain cabin to the vast prairie, she hopes it is her chance for a fresh start. She can leave behind the memory of the past winter; of her sickly ma giving birth to a baby sister who cries endlessly; of the terrifying visions she saw as her sanity began to slip, the victim of cabin fever; and most of all, the memories of the boy she has been secretly meeting with as a distraction from her pain. The boy whose baby she now carries.

When the Verners arrive at their new home, a large cabin abandoned by its previous owners, they discover the inside covered in blood. And as the days pass, it is obvious to Amanda that something isn't right on the prairie. She's heard stories of lands being tainted by evil, of men losing their minds and killing their families, and there is something strange about the doctor and his son who live in the woods on the edge of the prairie. But with the guilt and shame of her sins weighing on her, Amanda can't be sure if the true evil lies in the land, or deep within her soul.

My Review

I loved this book! I could not put Daughters Unto Devils down unless I absolutely had to (only to work to make money to by more books).

Opening Line:

The first time I lay with the post boy was on a Sunday, and I broke three commandments to do it.

Plot:

The premise of
Daughters Unto Devils, to me anyway, is Little House on the Prairie meets The Exorcist. I mean, come on, who would not want to read that? I was hooked from the opening line. And what an opening line it was!

The pacing was interesting. While not exactly slow, nothing really scary happened until the end. However, as I was reading I did not notice much. At least not to the extent that I could put the book down for extended periods of time. I mean I zoomed right through it -- granted it was a fairly short book -- but still I was so drawn into the book there was not a moment I did not want more.

Gritty and eloquent, I so loved Lukavics' writing. It was so refreshing to reading something not so prime and proper. Overall, Amy Lukavics is a talented writer and she has made my short auto-buy list. Daughters Unto Devils was real, frightening and I did not want it to end. Without a doubt, I recommend Daughters Unto Devils to anyone who is interested in horror - it is a must-read.

Character Breakdown:

Amanda Verners - Her character was real to me. She drew me into the story. At first, I thought she was completely nuts but as the story continued, I honestly began to sympathize with and see her more as a troubled teen growing up in a very different time.

She is trying not to sound desperate for my sake, but still i can sense that she is pining for him. And by the way he turns around, looks into her eyes, and steps close enough to kiss her if he wanted, it's clear he feels the same way. This is when I fully realize that the post boy from the mountain never loved me at all. - pages 159-160

Pa Verners -- Oh man, did I not like this man. There were time when he was just plain mean. And I wanted to choke him.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from Daughters Unto Devils:

Ma to Amanda: "I tried and tried, but in the end there was no room for me, oh no.
She stops eating for a moment, tilts her head curosiously. "Because you already have a devil in you, girl. I can see him whispering in your ear right now."

Sinner.  - page 213

Meet the Author:

Amy Lukavics lurks within the pine-topped mountains of Arizona, along with her husband and two precious squidlings. When she isn't reading or writing creepy stories, she enjoys cooking, crafting, and playing video games. Daughters Unto Devils is her debut novel.

Cover Mania! #14

*Hosted by The Tattered Page, Cover Mania! features covers that compel their own posts*

Being so drawn to this cover, I felt compelled to dedicate a post to it. Take a look:

I JUST CAN'T GET OVER THIS COVER. Generally, I am not a fan of UK covers . . . but can I get an Amen for this UK cover of Daughters Unto Devils? Because, I mean, it is perfect. Way better than the US cover. Not to mention, the story sounds like a must-read -- I first heard about it at the Harlequin Teen Author Breakfast this year at BEA.

Here is the US cover:

Overview:

If that beautiful cover isn't enough (how could it not be enough?), I have another treat for you, Bookies! Take a special look at an excerpt from Walk the Edge!

EXCERPT provided by Happy Ever After :
There are certain common-sense rules all girls in town comprehend. It’s not knowledge that has to be taught. In fact, sitting here on the top step to the entrance of my high school and watching this potential disaster unfold, I search my memory for the first person who mentioned I should stay clear of the Reign of Terror Motorcycle Club.
Because when it pertains to the threat that is the Reign of Terror MC, it’s not learned, it’s known. Like how an infant understands how to suck in a breath at the moment of birth or how a newborn foal wobbles to his legs. It’s instinctual. It’s ingrained. It’s fact.
“Do you think his motorcycle will work this time?” Addison asks.
“Hope so,” I breathe out, too terrified to speak at a normal level out of fear that we’ll draw the scrutiny of the men wearing black leather vests circling the broken-down bike. Reign of Terrorarches over the top of the black vest; in the middle is a half skull with far too much fire in and around it. It’s ominous and I shiver.
It’s edging toward nine in the evening, but the August sun hasn’t completely set. Darkness, though, has claimed most of the sky. Temperatures during the afternoon hit over a hundred and I swear the concrete stairs and pillar absorbed every ounce of today’s sunshine and are now transferring the heat onto my body.
Sweat rolls down my back and I shift to peel my thighs off the step. Why I thought it was a fantastic idea to wear a jean skirt, I have no idea.
I take that back. I do have an idea. Tonight is the first time my entire grade has been together in one room since the end of last year. My goal for the year may seem simple to some, but to me, it sometimes feels impossible. I’d like to be seen, to be known as something more than “freakishly smart Breanna Miller” at least once before I leave this town. I’d like to somehow find the courage to be on the outside who I am on the inside.
An annoying sixth sense informs me that I’m about to make a huge impression—on the evening news. Two friends on the verge of starting their senior year vanish without a trace. Because that’s how motorcycle clubs would handle this—they’ll kidnap us and then hide our bodies after they’re finished with whatever ritual act they’ll use us to perform.
One of the gang members stands from his crouched position at the motorcycle and the guy we attend school with inserts a key and holds on to the handlebar of the bike. As he twists it, I pray the motor will purr to life.
My heart leaps, then plummets past my toes and into the ground when the motorcycle cuts off with a sound similar to a gunshot. Addison’s head falls forward, and I bite my lip to prevent the internal screaming from becoming external chaos.
Addison pulls her phone out of her purse and taps the screen. “I’m texting Reagan. If we go missing, I’m telling her to point the finger at Thomas Turner and his band of Merry Men.”
Thomas Turner. He’s the guy that swore loudly the moment his motorcycle’s engine died again. Thomas is the name called on the first day of school by our teachers, but it’s not the name he responds to. He goes by his “road name,” Razor.
He glances over his shoulder straight at me and my mouth dries out. Holy hell, it’s like he’s aware I’m thinking of him.
“Oh my God,” Addison reprimands. “Don’t make eye contact. Do you want them to come over?”
I immediately focus on my sandals. As much as every girl knows to keep a safe distance from Thomas and his crew, we’ve all snuck a glimpse. Thomas makes it easy to cave to temptation with his golden blond hair and muscles from head to toe, and he owns this sexy brooding expression a few girls have written about in poems.
My cheeks burn and there’s this heaviness as if Thomas is still looking. Through lowered lashes, I peek at him and my heart trips when our eyes meet. His eyes are blue. An icy blue. His stare causes me to be simultaneously curious and terrified. And I obviously have a death wish because I can’t tear my gaze away…

The Story:

Love or life. Henry or their child. The end of her family or the end of the world.

With the fate of everyone she loves resting on her shoulders, Kate must do the impossible: find a way to defeat the most powerful being in existence, even if it costs her everything.
Even if it costs her eternity.

Rating: THREE Gold Stars!!!

My Review:

I adored the The Goddess Test series. The writing wasn't the most sophisticated considering it was published but the premise of the story was great. Next to YA werewolf romance, I LOVE retellings of the Hades and Persephone story. So, I gobbled The Goddess Test series up in no time. If you enjoy YA books inspired by Greek mythology look no further.

Tag Line:

Immortality or love. You can't have both.

Opening Line:

Henry.
I bolted upright up in the darkness.

The Plot:

The Goddess Interrupted ended on a major cliffhanger which set up the plot for perfectly. In the conclusion to the series, Kate had to deal with a pregnancy, the betrayal of her closest friend, her separation from Hades and being held captive by the most powerful being, Cronus under the threat of fatal harm to those she holds dear. The plot is filled with drama, angst, emotional tug-a-war and more.

Character Breakdown:

Kate Winters - Kate's biggest virtue was how selfless she was. No matter how bad you treated her or the horrible things you've done, she always forgave. Maybe she wasn't a fierce fighter but she had strong character.

Cover Reveal! Katie McGarry's Nowhere But Here

Hey Bookies! If you know anything about me, it's that Katie McGarry is one of my favorite authors. So, when I heard she has a new series, Thunder Road, coming out, I nearly lost my mind. Nowhere But Here is being pitched as West Side Story meets Sons of Anarchy . . . what more do you need to know? I cannot wait for Nowhere But Here to make it to print! I am nonstop praying to the book gods my contact at Harlequin will give me an ARC of my precious! *fingers crossed*
The Story:
An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible
Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.
Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.
No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

Feature Friday ARC Review : Captive by Aimee Carter (The Blackcoat Rebellion #2)

*Feature Friday is a meme I came up with to feature YA books that have not yet been released by reviewing them on The Tattered Page.*

*Warning: This review may contain spoilers. Read at your own risk.

Release Date: November 25, 2014
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Pages: 304
Source: ARC

The Story:

The truth can set her free
For the past two months, Kitty Doe's life has been a lie. Forced to impersonate Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, in a hostile meritocracy on the verge of revolution, Kitty sees her frustration grow as her trust in her fake fiancé cracks, her real boyfriend is forbidden and the Blackcoat rebels she is secretly supporting keep her in the dark more than ever.
But in the midst of discovering that her role in the Hart family may not be as coincidental as she thought, she's accused of treason and is forced to face her greatest fear: Elsewhere. A prison where no one can escape.
As one shocking revelation leads to the next, Kitty learns the hard way that she can trust no one, not even the people she thought were on her side. With her back against the wall, Kitty wants to believe she'll do whatever it takes to support the rebellion she believes in—but is she prepared to pay the ultimate price?

Rating: THREE Gold Stars!!!

My Review:

First off, Captive is the second book in Carter's Blackcoat Rebellion trilogy so if you have not read the first book, Pawn, I suggest you do so before reading this review. Second, I requested a copy of Captive through my contact at Harlequin Teen and was promptly sent it -- thank you! Now, moving on . . .

The stories picks up shortly after Pawn left off. Augusta Hart is dead and Daxton Hart is now Prime Minister of America. Although Daxton knows Kitty made an attempt on his life, Kitty is still forced to impersonate his niece Lila Hart. Crossed between wanted to continue her secret effort with the Blackcoat Rebellion in garnering supporters for the cause and keeping the love of her life, Benjy, safe, Kitty does as she is told . . . for the most part.

Losing trust in the leadership of the Blackcoat Rebellion, Kitty tries to move things along and obtain the leverage she needs to slip away quietly into the life she and Benjy have always envisioned. As luck would have it, Kitty gets caught redhanded. As punishment, she is sent to Elsewhere -- the government claims that it is where the old retired but Kitty knows better. Still, there is more to Elsewhere than even Kitty knows. It is in Elsewhere, we learn new secrets, revelations and see Kitty fend for herself for the first time.

Captive ends on a hell of a cliffhanger that had me screaming and wanted to read the next book in the trilogy. I look forward to seeing how the characters evolve, the final outcome of the Blackcoat Rebellion and the story ends.

Character Breakdown:

Kitty Doe - I wanted Kitty to be a stronger female character from the first but since it was a three-book series I decided I could wait at least until the second book. Kitty's disobedience is definitely admirable but most of the time is never amounts to anything beyond her getting caught. I quiet enjoyed her strength when she truly took a stand and became somewhat of a badass towards the end of Captive -- I definitely hope to see more of that version of Kitty in Queen.

Lennox Creed - Knox was so utterly frustrating. I never knew whether to distrust or trust him, hate or love him . . . kick him in the balls or hug him close. Basically he was a douche who did nice things every once and a while. Moreover, he expected Kitty to behave like an obedient puppy without question yet he was an absolute jerk most of the time -- especially at the beginning of the story. I am hoping readers will gets a clearer picture of his character by the end of the trilogy.

All in all, Carter's Blackcoat Rebellion trilogy is so far so good. If you are on the hunt for a fast, dystopian read you are in luck!
