So it is January 17th, 2014 and guess what?! I finished another manuscript!!! I cannot believe I have another one under my belt. This go around was so much different than the journey I had with my first. My first took me a lot longer to complete (granted I took year-long breaks here and there) and it was three books in one (600 pages, yikes). Where as this one took my about three months. When I first arrived at Cornell University in Fall of 2012, I heard about NaNoWriMo for the first time. It just so happened that there was a free writing workshop taking place at the local bookstore -- Buffalo Street Books-- and the two hosts introduced us to NaNoWriMo since it was the month of November. Anywho, during the workshops, they gave us prompts that were actually pretty interesting (and I am not one for writing prompts). And so . . .
CRIMSON was born!
That month had wrote no more than 80 pages (if even that) but since I was still in school and finals were approaching, I put Crimson on the back-burner. Then once winter break (a merciful 2 months) I still left CRIMSON in the background since I still had yet to finish my first baby. November came once again but this time classes were so boring I decided to bring CRIMSON back to life and work on it while I was in class. Hey, I needed something to keep me awake :) So, give or take 4 pages on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the rest of the month. After surviving finals and the semester I could not wait to get home and finish. And two days before I was due back to Cornell for Spring (and my final semester, YAY!) I finished all 242 pages . . .
Here is the blurb I wrote up for CRIMSON:
O grandmother,
what large ears you have!
The better to
hear you with.
O grandmother,
what great eyes you have!
The better to
see you with.
O grandmother,
what large hands you have!
The better to
take hold of you with.
But,
grandmother, what a terrible mouth you have!
The better to
devour you!
In this twisted retelling of the Big Bad Wolf and
the little girl with the red hood, Riley “Red” McCabe has grown up always
wondering why. Why couldn’t they find her mother? Why have wolves always
fascinated her and haunted her dreams? Now she’s wondering why the only person
in the world that has always been there for her, loving her unconditionally, is
gone? When her father is murdered in an attempted burglary, Red is forced to
leave their small apartment in bustling New York City to live with a woman who
has barely left her cabin in the woods in the last fifteen years. The
grandmother she barely knows, Grenna McCabe.
But soon after her arrival in Savage Moon – a small
village in Montana –, Red discovers that what you see isn’t always what you
get. And that people are not always who they seem to be. Especially not the
brash, brooding Derek Mason who seems to do everything in his power to get
under Riley’s skin. And makes her question old tales told to children to keep
them from wandering far from home and talking to strangers. But what if the Big
Bad Wolf does exist? And trolls the woods of Savage Moon, awaiting his next
meal?
Perhaps the Grimm Brothers were actually onto
something after all.
CRIMSON, that would be the first in a series of books, The Grimm
Chronicles. CRIMSON is a paranormal romance novel for young adults (60,374
words), narrated by Riley McCabe and takes place over a duration of about four
months.
What do you think? Sound like something you would be interested in reading?
Happy Reading!
