But after the bloodthirsty Sultan of Miraji imprisoned the Rebel Prince Ahmed in the mythical city of Eremot, she doesn't have a choice. Armed with only her revolver, her wits, and her untameable Demdji powers, Amani must rally her skeleton crew of rebels for a rescue mission through the unforgiving desert to a place that, according to maps, doesn't exist. As she watches those she loves most lay their lives on the line against ghouls and enemy soldiers, Amani questions whether she can be the leader they need or if she is leading them all to their deaths.

 by Sarah J. Maas

Publisher
Disney-Hyperion
Release Date: January 9, 2018
Pages: 336

The Story:

From the New York Times best-selling author duo Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner comes a "literally breathtaking" new sci-fi series about a death-defying mission on an alien planet.
When Earth intercepts a message from a long-extinct alien race, it seems like the solution humanity has been waiting for. The Undying's advanced technology has the potential to undo environmental damage and turn lives around, and their message leads to the planet Gaia, a treasure trove waiting to be explored.
For Jules Addison and his fellow scholars, the discovery of an ancient alien culture offers unprecedented opportunity for study... as long as scavengers like Amelia Radcliffe don't loot everything first. Despite their opposing reasons for smuggling themselves onto the alien planet's surface, they're both desperate to uncover the riches hidden in the Undying temples. Beset by rival scavenger gangs, Jules and Mia form a fragile alliance... but both are keeping secrets that make trust nearly impossible.
As they race to decode the ancient messages, Jules and Mia must navigate the traps and trials within the Undying temples and stay one step ahead of the scavvers on their heels. They came to Gaia certain that they had far more to fear from their fellow humans than the ancient beings whose mysteries they're trying to unravel. But the more they learn about the Undying, the more Jules and Mia start to feel like their presence in the temple is part of a grand design--one that could spell the end of the human race...

Spread the Word Sunday : On My Block

*Spread the Word Sunday is a meme hosted by The Tattered Page to announce some sort of book related news or cause.*

Hey Bookies!

This is a completely non-book related post, but I have to share this marvelous Netflix discovery:

Image result for ON MY BLOCK

Synopsis:

On My Block, co-created by Lauren Iungerich (creator of Awkward) and Eddie Gonzalez & Jeremy Haft, is a coming of age comedy about four bright, funny and street-savvy friends find their lifelong friendship tested as they navigate their way through the triumph, pain and the newness of high-school set in a rough inner city Los Angeles neighborhood.

Here's the trailer:

Starring
- Sierra Capri as Monse Finnie
-Diego Tinoco as Cesar Diaz
-Jason Genao as Ruben "Ruby" Martinez
-Brett Gray as Jamal Turner

Thoughts:

Although the show is considered a comedy, it is about 4 young adults trying to navigate life in a gritty Los Angeles existence while their lifelong long is put to the test. Central ideas include gangs, a scavenger hunt for the mythical neighborhood treasure from a heist in the '80s, first love, deportation and more.

Jamal Turner's character is HILARIOUS! And I sympathize with him on so many levels. I had a feeling if there were a quiz out there to find out which On the Block Character you are, my result would be his character.

Low and behold, there is such a quiz. Thanks to the all glorious Buzzfeed

Here is my result:

Let me not forget to mention the music! On My Block's soundtrack was fire. I have a playlist dedicated to songs from the show. Here it is:

SORROWS - BLESSED

ONE AND ONLY - BLESSED

COMEMYWAY - JSPH

EYE FOR AN EYE - SiDizen King & The Strike

JUST A LITTLE - Bantu

INSECURE - Stwo

ELECTRIC - Alina Baraz ft. Khalid

BOTTLE ROCKET - Kovas ft. Domo Genesis

PARACHUTE - AM!R

2 - H.E.R.

BLOOD ON ME - Sampha

RUNNER - Kevin Abstract

LEVELS - Tattoo Money

And I have to say -- I am utterly obsessed with the Monse and Cesar ship! I need them to stay together. Forever. Find a life together outside of their block -- pun intended ;) A better life. Monse a famous writer, Cesar a successful architect. Get married. Have beautiful babies. And have holiday visits with the "fam".

I need them to be another rare couple that lasts through the TV show's running. Like Nathan Scott and Haley James. Forever and Always #TeamNaley!

I need there to be a Ride or Die Team Monsar!

The Story:

King Midas once had the ability to turn all he touched into gold. But after his gift—or curse—almost killed his daughter, Midas relinquished The Touch forever. Ten years later, Princess Kora still bears the consequences of her father’s wish: her skin shines golden, rumors follow her everywhere she goes, and she harbors secret powers that are getting harder to hide.
Kora spends her days locked in the palace, concealed behind gloves and veils, trying to ignore the stares and gossip of courtiers. It isn’t until a charming young duke arrives that Kora realizes there may be someone out there who doesn’t fear her or her curse. But their courtship is disrupted when a thief steals precious items from the kingdom, leaving the treasury depleted and King Midas vulnerable. Thanks to her unique ability to sense gold, Kora is the only one who can track the thief down. As she sails off on her quest, Kora learns that not everything is what it seems—not thieves, not pirates, and not even curses. She quickly discovers that gold—and the power it brings—is more dangerous than she’d ever believed.
Midas learned his lesson at a price. What will Kora’s journey cost?
From author Annie Sullivan comes A Touch of Gold, the untold story of the daughter King Midas turned to gold, perfect for fans of Cinder and The Wrath and the Dawn.
This book features a beautiful, decorated cover.

My Review

First off, I want to thank Blink for sending me
A Touch of Gold to read and review.

Tag Line:

Gold is wealth. Wealth is power. Power is a curse.
Opening Line:

Once upon a time, a little girl helplessly watched as liquid gold spun a web across her tiny frame, racing up to wrap her up in an icy coccon.

Plot:

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when I decided to read A Touch of Gold. One, because I decided not to read the blurb and two, because the first few pages told me the story was inspired by King Midas.

I love retellings of interesting myths and fables. But I didn’t know where there story was headed at all. And that definitely worked in its favor.

Gold. Pirates. A cursed princess. And a kingdom at stake.

Bearing the consequences of her fathers curse, Princess Kora spent many years hidden away at the castle while the kingdom crumbled around her. Until the last of her father’s Gold goes missing she is forced to leave the shelter of her castle and seek the gold before it’s too late.

The pacing of A Touch of Gold was a nicely tuned to the unfurling of the plot-line. While not terribly exciting -- considering it is also a pirate's tale -- or steamy -although there is a love-triangle, sort of -- Annie Sullivan'writing was interesting and did not drag. A Touch of Gold world-building was decent as well. I did not expect this to be a seafaring, pirates' tale. But, though not the most exceptional story, I thoroughly enjoyed A Touch of Gold.

"While we're vying for control, I wink at him. It's another trick I've learned from my cousin--she  has no qualms about using her femininity to distract Rhat when they fight.

The move has the same effect oon Royce. He pulls back just a little, and while he's distracted, I grab the smaller piece of wood tucked into the back of my shirt that's meant to represent a dagger. I ram it into his ribs." --pages 245

All in all, while I may not be obsessed with A Touch of Gold, I did quite enjoy it. It was a quick read and if you like mythological retellings, the story is definitely worth a read.
