THE STORY:

A sumptuously magical, brand new take on a tale as old as time—read the Beast's side of the story at long last.

I am neither monster nor man—yet I am both.

I am the Beast.

The day I was cursed to this wretched existence was the day I was saved—although it did not feel so at the time.

My redemption sprung from contemptible roots; I am not proud of what I did the day her father happened upon my crumbling, isolated chateau. But if loneliness breeds desperation then I was desperate indeed, and I did what I felt I must. My shameful behaviour was unjustly rewarded.

My Isabeau. She opened my eyes, my mind and my heart; she taught me how to be human again.

And now I might lose her forever.

Lose yourself in this gorgeously rich and magical retelling of The Beauty and the Beast that finally lays bare the beast's heart.

REVIEW:

Guys, I couldn’t do it. The start of the book is the beast thinking to himself—a bunch of exposition. So boring. So irritating, especially since Beauty and the Beast retellings are my bread and butter.

Had to DNF.

Perhaps I’m just not in a patient mood and return to it at a later date. We’ll see.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Leife Shallcross’s first novel, The Beast’s Heart, a "luxuriously magical retelling of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale", will be published by Hodder & Stoughton in May 2018. She is also the author of several short stories, including Pretty Jennie Greenteeth, which won the 2016 Aurealis Award for Best Young Adult Short Story. Leife has a bit of a thing for fairy tales, and is particularly inspired by those characters that tend to fall into the cracks of the usual stories. CASTLES IN THEIR BONES by Laura Sebastian

PublisherDelacorte Press
Release DateFebruary 1, 2022
Pages: 528

THE STORY:

A spellbinding story of three princesses and the destiny they were born for: seduction, conquest, and the crown. Immerse yourself in the first book in a new fantasy trilogy from the author of the New York Times bestselling Ash Princess series.
Empress Margaraux has had plans for her daughters since the day they were born. Princesses Sophronia, Daphne, and Beatriz will be queens. And now, age sixteen, they each must leave their homeland and marry their princes.
Beautiful, smart, and demure, the triplets appear to be the perfect brides—because Margaraux knows there is one common truth: everyone underestimates a girl. Which is a grave mistake. Sophronia, Daphne, and Beatriz are no innocents. They have been trained since birth in the arts of deception, seduction, and violence with a singular goal—to bring down monarchies— and their marriages are merely the first stage of their mother’s grand vision: to one day reign over the entire continent of Vesteria.
The princesses have spent their lives preparing, and now they are ready, each with her own secret skill, and each with a single wish, pulled from the stars. Only, the stars have their own plans—and their mother hasn’t told them all of hers.
Life abroad is a test. Will their loyalties stay true? Or will they learn that they can’t trust anyone—not even each other?

“I’ll take the job,” she said, as if they’d been discussing the job.

“I’m sorry?”

“Have you hired someone?” She glanced at her watch. “In the past fifteen minutes?”

“No, I haven’t. I…” He didn’t know what to say. This woman had secrets. She had a brokenness that scared the daylights out of him.

But she made his niece smile. For that matter, she made him smile.

“If you’d rather find someone else, I understand. I’m obviously not experienced. I’ve already admitted that I can’t cook and I’m also only here temporarily, but I could fill the spot until you find someone more suitable.”

“What made you change your mind?” he asked, glad that his niece had wandered ahead to talk to a friend.

She shrugged a shoulder and glanced around. “A lot of reasons. Shay needs someone who understands what she’s going through. I do know how much it hurts to feel abandoned by the people who should care the most. Also, I feel the need to do more than sit by myself in Nan’s boat shop. Plus, Nan fired me this morning.”

“She fired you?” He couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Yeah, she did.” Her eyes briefly twinkled. “She said I’m in her way. She likes her solitary time. She doesn’t mind my help, but she doesn’t want me to become a fixture in her shop.”

“Shay is a challenge,” he warned.

If she worked for him, could he remain impartial, not getting involved, not caring what her story might be? He doubted it. But he had to do what Shay’s parents hadn’t done: he had to put his niece first. For some reason, he thought this woman might be the right thing for Shay. For the time being.

“I need a challenge.” She smiled.

“I get weekly calls from the school. I think she thinks if she’s bad enough, her parents will ride to the rescue. They won’t.”

“I’m sorry about that. Parents aren’t always what we need them to be. Sometimes they can’t be, sometimes they choose not to be.”

It made him angry to think about his sister and brother-in-law, the choices they’d made putting them first and Shay last. Could this woman put Shay first? “She needs people who will support her but not allow her to get away with the trouble she’s causing.”

“I can be that person,” she assured him with a subtle lift of her chin. “Give me a week. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll go back to boats.”

He grinned. “I guess we can give it a one-week trial. Can you be at the house tomorrow at six?”

“So early?”

“Second thoughts?” he asked.

“Only for a moment,” she admitted. Then they were next in line to get plates, so they spoke no more on the subject.

Tucker was generally an optimistic person, but he knew that letting Clara into his home—and his life—was going to bring an array of problems.

First and foremost, he liked her. He liked her a lot. And that was a big problem.

“Just relax and float…”

Trey hadn’t felt this relaxed in months. He closed his eyes, allowing his body to become one with the water. Regaining this small sense of movement was a defining moment for him—he felt a sense of freedom he’d thought was long gone.

“You’re doing fantastic,” Gia murmured.

At every encouraging word and smile from her and Gia’s obvious faith in him, Trey’s heart turned over in response. There was no fighting it any longer. He wanted something more than friendship from her. He’d been crushing on her at first like before, but what he felt now defied words.

However, reality sank in. What could he offer Gia?

Yet…the way she looked at him motivated him to take a chance with her. After all, she was his biggest cheerleader and she often reminded him that he could continue to improve his quality of life, including having a family.

At the end of the aquatic therapy session, Gia assisted him back into his wheelchair.

He decided to take the leap. He didn’t just want to be her friend. He wanted more. He wanted Gia.

“How do you feel about mixing business with pleasure?”

She dried herself off. “I’m not sure what you mean by that.”

His eyes traveled over her face, studying her expression. “Will you have dinner with me? As in a date.”

Gia gave a slight nod. “I’d love it.” She handed him a towel. “But I can’t unless you fire me, or I quit. It’s not ethical for me to date my patients.”

“Then you’re fired.”

Grinning, she responded, “In that case, I have a replacement in mind for you.”

He was surprised. “Were you planning to quit on me?”

Gia laughed. “No, I simply wanted to be prepared in case something happened to me, or if we decided to be more than friends.”

“We have gotten pretty close,” Trey said. “I’ve tried to keep it professional, but I really care for you.”

“I feel the same way,” Gia responded.

Her words thrilled him. Clearing his throat, he stated, “If you don’t mind coming to the

house later, I can order some food from the café. I really don’t enjoy eating alone. I never really have.”

“How about I cook something?” she suggested. “I’ll have to check your refrigerator to see what I have to work with.”

He chuckled.

TAG LINE:

One sister.

Infinite deception with a side of revenge… Welcome to Hell.

OPENING LINE:

Once upon a cursed dawn, a king strode through his castle, his footsteps thundering down the corridor, sending even the shadows skittering away to avoid notice.

REVIEW:

This book was so fucking good!!! Do you know the tale as old as time: the sequel is worse than the first book? Well, that shit doesn’t apply here. When I tell y’all how Wrath had me wrapped around his damn finger. I am not kidding this demon man is so fucking hot he had my ovaries quivering. Haven’t lusted this hard after a fictional man since meeting Casteel for the first time ages ago.

“𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝓈𝓉𝒶𝓇𝓈 𝒾𝓃𝒸𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑒 𝓊𝓈; 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓎 𝒹𝑜 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝒷𝒾𝓃𝒹 𝓊𝓈."

The highlights of KINGDOM OF THE CURSED include devilish schemes, magic,  debauched masked galas, another interesting mystery, and Wrath even has pets!

KINGDOM OF THE CURSED also has some of our favorite tropes: enemies-to-lovers, forbidden, marriage of convenience (sort of? ), forced proximity.

“𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝓅𝓇𝒾𝒹𝑒 𝒹𝒾𝒹𝓃'𝓉 𝒶𝓅𝓅𝑒𝒶𝓇 𝒾𝓃 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓉 𝒷𝑜𝓃𝑒 𝒸𝒾𝓇𝒸𝓁𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓃𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝓈𝓅𝒾𝓁𝓁𝑒𝒹 𝒷𝓁𝑜𝑜𝒹 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓈𝓊𝓂𝓂𝑜𝓃𝑒𝒹 𝓂𝑒. 𝐼𝓉 𝓌𝒶𝓈 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝓌𝓇𝒶𝓉𝒽. 𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝒻𝓊𝓇𝓎.”

In this second installment of the KINGDOM OF THE WICKED series, the white magic witch Emilia di Carlo finds herself in the underbelly of Hell, ever more determined to discover which wicked Prince of Hell brutally murdered her sister, Vittoria. And she's even more willing to make any bargains necessary to find answers.

“𝐼 𝓌𝒶𝓃𝓉𝑒𝒹 𝓉𝑜 𝓀𝒾𝓈𝓈 𝒽𝒾𝓂. 𝒫𝑜𝓈𝓈𝒾𝒷𝓁𝓎 𝒷𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓀 𝒶 𝒷𝑜𝓉𝓉𝓁𝑒 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓈𝓉𝒶𝒷 𝒽𝒾𝓂 𝒻𝒾𝓇𝓈𝓉. 𝐵𝓊𝓉 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒹𝑒𝒻𝒾𝓃𝒾𝓉𝑒𝓁𝓎 𝓀𝒾𝓈𝓈 𝒽𝒾𝓂.”

Now for the romance part. Our favorite enemies-to-lovers, forbidden lovers are back! And hotter than ever. I was so freaking stoked when I found out KINGDOM OF THE CURSED would be NA instead of YA like its predecessor. If any YA couple deserved smut it was Emilia and Wrath. Not only does Emilia find herself in the midst of Hell, caught between the wicked Princes of Hell. One prince in particular: Wrath. Wrath is powerful, cunning, and deliciously sinful. While Emilia is forced to work with Wrath to maneuver the nuances of Hell, she also tries to maneuver their growing attraction for one another.

Temptation has never been more difficult to ignore.

Will she or won't she? As she tries to uncover her sister's murder, Emilia must do everything her power to not fall for Wrath's charms or under his alluring demonic influence.

“𝐿𝑜𝓋𝑒 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝒽𝒶𝓉𝑒 𝒶𝓇𝑒 𝒷𝑜𝓉𝒽 𝓇𝑜𝑜𝓉𝑒𝒹 𝒾𝓃 𝓅𝒶𝓈𝓈𝒾𝑜𝓃.”

The plotting of KOTC was fantastically laid out with tantalizing mysteries and plot-twists upon plot-twists. Such delicious ones too! And the ending! Dear lord, talk about a scrumptious cliffhanger. And that's coming from someone who is not a fan of cliffhangers. Kerri also remained a master of wordplay and tension and her prose was as amazing as KOTW. She didn't disappoint.

“𝐼 𝓌𝒶𝓃𝓉𝑒𝒹 𝓉𝑜 𝒸𝓇𝒶𝒸𝓀 𝒽𝒾𝓈 𝓈𝑜𝓊𝓁 𝑜𝓅𝑒𝓃 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓇𝑒𝒶𝒹 𝒽𝒾𝓂 𝓁𝒾𝓀𝑒 𝒶 𝒷𝑜𝑜𝓀, 𝒹𝒾𝓈𝒸𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓇𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒹𝑒𝑒𝓅𝑒𝓈𝓉 𝓈𝑒𝒸𝓇𝑒𝓉𝓈 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓈𝓉𝑜𝓇𝒾𝑒𝓈 𝑜𝒻 𝒽𝑜𝓌 𝒽𝑒 𝒸𝒶𝓂𝑒 𝓉𝑜 𝒷𝑒.”

KINGDOM OF THE CURSED was fast-paced and it'll have you fully submerged in the world, desperate not to put the book down. I highly recommend KINGDOM OF THE CURSED! It was one of my top 5 favorite reads of 2021. Please, please just read KINGDOM OF THE WICKED and KINGDOM OF THE CURSED.

CHARACTERS:

EMILIAI really connected with Emilia in KOTW and that remains true in KOTC. Though Emilia was the quieter, calmer, safe sister who lived by the rules and preferred fictional worlds over the dangerous real ones. That all changed when her sister was brutally murdered. Accepting her fate and willing to risk everything to uncover her sister's murderer, she married the Devil so she could infiltrate the Kingdom of the Wicked and find out which Prince of Hell was responsible for her sister's death. In KOTC, she was feisty, less reserved, and spicy.

“𝐼𝓃𝓈𝓉𝑒𝒶𝒹 𝑜𝒻 𝒷𝑒𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓇𝓊𝓁𝑒𝒹 𝒷𝓎 𝒻𝑒𝒶𝓇, 𝐼 𝒸𝑜𝓊𝓁𝒹 𝒷𝑒𝒸𝑜𝓂𝑒 𝒻𝑒𝒶𝓇𝓁𝑒𝓈𝓈.”

WRATH: Ever mysterious and intriguing, Wrath remains the most "human" compared to his brothers. I wanted to trust him so badly. To believe this coaxing, seductive demon Prince of Hell was capable of genuine feelings. Powerful, handsome, and more than a touch wicked, he's the sinfully perfect love interest I love reading.

“𝒯𝑒𝓁𝓁 𝓂𝑒,” 𝒽𝑒 𝓌𝒽𝒾𝓈𝓅𝑒𝓇𝑒𝒹, 𝒽𝒾𝓈 𝓋𝑜𝒾𝒸𝑒 𝓈𝓁𝒾𝒹𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓁𝒾𝓀𝑒 𝓈𝒾𝓁𝓀 𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝓂𝓎 𝒻𝓁𝓊𝓈𝒽𝑒𝒹 𝓈𝓀𝒾𝓃. “𝒲𝒽𝒶𝓉?” 𝑀𝓎 𝑜𝓌𝓃 𝓋𝑜𝒾𝒸𝑒 𝒸𝒶𝓂𝑒 𝑜𝓊𝓉 𝒷𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓉𝒽𝓁𝑒𝓈𝓈. “𝐼 𝒶𝓂 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝒻𝒶𝓋𝑜𝓇𝒾𝓉𝑒 𝓈𝒾𝓃.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I'm mostly on instagram--where I'm always ready to talk fictional crushes and nerd out over books. (Okay, okay. And I've also been known to share snippets and teasers from my upcoming novels, if you're into that sort of thing...) Please feel free to chat with me there @KerriManiscalco. I love talking with fellow readers!

Kerri Maniscalco grew up in a semi-haunted house outside NYC where her fascination with gothic settings began. In her spare time she reads everything she can get her hands on, cooks all kinds of food with her family and friends, and drinks entirely too much tea while discussing life’s finer points with her cats.

She is the #1 NYT and USA Today bestselling author of the STALKING JACK THE RIPPER quartet. The final installment, CAPTURING THE DEVIL, will be released on 9/10/19. KINGDOM OF THE WICKED, the first in a new YA fantasy series, is slated for fall 2020.
